Orange Peel QAL: General Supplies and Tutorial List

Welcome to the second post of the Orange Peel Quilt-A-Long! The final linky party doesn't start until August 23, so you have plenty of time to try orange peels out and whip something up! See here for everything about the QAL, including the three categories, recently announced prizes, and Viewer's Choice contest.

Pinterest Inspiration Board - in case you need some inspiration. I will keep adding to it throughout the QAL!

The only rules are:
  •  Orange peels of any kind must be a main design element of your project.
    • This will be taken into account during judging.
  • You may link up one entry per category (via blog or Flickr). Please include dimensions when you post!
    • The three categories are quilt, "just the top," and mini - see the official page for details.
  • Your project(s) must be made in 2014.
  •  Have fun!
Two ways to share your progress:
  • #orangepeelqal on Instagram - share your design, progress, and finish photos
  •  Flickr Group - share your design, progress, and finish photos. Also, chat with other participants!

The point of this QAL is to have fun and try something new and challenging! Don't let the potentially time-consuming part of orange peels become your enemy. Conquer them in steps and you will make something you are so proud of! I can't wait to see what you make!! You can totally do this, and like I said above, there's plenty of time. :)

Here's some inspiration  from Flickr! These are some really creative ways to use orange peels.

I have yet to find improv orange peels... wouldn't they look cool?!

Today's topic is important! Maybe you've started designing your quilt already. Fabulous! The next step is to decide how you are going to make your peels.

General Supplies:
1. Fabric! Whether you're cutting from scraps (which are perfect for this) or yardage, you need to decide on your color scheme. Also, you need to have fabric for your background. Obviously, the amount of fabric depends on how big your project is.

2. Interfacing. Whether you are using applique or attaching by iron, you will likely need interfacing, a thin stabilizer. I'm using Pellon Fusible Featherweight Interfacing which I found cheap at my local Walmart (I bought 3 yards but I have a ton extra). If you are piecing your orange peels, you won't need interfacing.

3. Coordinating thread. If you are attaching by applique and/or quilting over them. OR, maybe you want to use a contrasting thread around the peels so you can see it. Hmm. The sky's the limit!

4. A stylus. A small tool you may need to turn your peels inside out. Instead of buying another tool, I very carefully used a pencil (I'll get to that next week).

5. A hot iron. Pressing your orange peels is important!

6. Time. Orange peels can be time consuming but I made mine in batches (one step at a time, so I didn't have to keep working through the process again and again).

7. Other oft-used sewing supplies (machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, etc.)

This is the start of my baby quilt this weekend. I'll have an update post later in the week - the top is done! This was over a weekend. Totally doable!

How to Make Orange Peels:
There's no definitive way to go about making these, but that's the fun of it. You can decide which option you are most comfortable with and go from there. If you are feeling adventurous, you could test drive each way and then decide which you like best!

Here's a list of patterns already available for the orange peel! Next week I'll explain how to create you own sized peels if you want to try your own.

I've also assembled a list of tutorials for each technique to make orange peels. It is by no means an exhaustive list, so I'm sure you'll be able to find more tips on the internet! If you have any questions about making orange peels, please feel free to email me and we can work together!
1. "Interfacing Method" (stitch and flip) - by Crazy Old Ladies
  • **This is my chosen method, and I love it. Next week's OPQAL post will include my experience using it, as well as tips and tricks I picked up.**

2. Machine Applique

3. Hand Applique:
You could also choose to piece your curves if you wish!

Good luck making your peels! And be sure to share your progress with everyone! :)

  1. You had me at "simple and fast!" Although I love the technique you're using. I'm thinking of making a tiny version from a mini charm pack--simple and fast (maybe)! And cute! But the scraps are calling me...but they make such a mess when they're out, I don't think I can handle one more mess right now.

  2. I soooo want to play but o have no idea when I'm going to catch up on new commitments and do selfish sewing. Maybe I can squeeze out a mini :p

  3. Making some progress. I really like this method of sewing and turning. My mom taught that to me one time and I did it for one project and forgot about it till now. I hope I can come up with something to try this again.
