Sunday Stash: Before and After

This isn't your typical Sunday Stash post (I've only added a bit to my stash this week and it's coming in the mail soon!). I decided yesterday that enough was enough - it was time to clean out/organize my stash!

For the last few months, I've been throwing fabric into piles based on color and neglecting to fold nicely. This is the result of that approach (more time spent organizing = less time sewing):

I sat down last night with all the piles around me (excluding precuts and all my Anna Maria Horner fabric) and a bunch of episodes of Girls (I'm in the second season)... it took about 2 hours to get everything all in shape.

Here's my AMH stash all in a heap - I'm working on organizing it for my medallion quilt (to start soon!).

Instead of spending any money on comic book boards (even though I get the impression from others that they aren't expensive), I just piled the colors side by side into my cabinet. It works for now, until I get a bigger cabinet. Anything that was below an FQ size went in my scrap bins (which are wayyy overflowing at the moment).

Meanwhile, I'm halfway done quilting a new quilt - more on that later this week (Whovians, make sure you check back!).

Do you go on organization binges like I do?

  1. Bravo !
I tend to re-arange/organize while working each project.
At least once a year I 'binge' and do the entire stash.

  2. I really need to do this myself . Good for you having accomplished this task.

  3. I had to clean my work room because (in addition to housing my stash) it's also the guest bedroom. My folks are coming to visit. I pray my mom doesn't open the closet.

  4. Yes, I do. I usually go through my stash of fabrics, yarns and other craft items and totally rearrange and try to make it easier to get to. What I need to do is just stay in the habit of putting everything back in order when I'm done with a project instead of just stuffing it back in the cabinets trying to get the work area cleaned up. :)

  5. I like to organize when my 'stuff' gets too out of control, and I can't stand it anymore. Like maybe every two or three . . years! Otherwise I just sew on.

  6. So fancy! I need to go on an organizing binge. I went on a Lego building binge for three days but that make my house less organized.

  7. i have my fabric in bins. piled to the ceiling. and they are marked what color is in them; great job right? wrong. they are piled so high and the bin is so heavy i cant get it down to look into it. i cant get it down myself and rather than ask my husband for help, its easier to go and buy more. so having a stash isnt all it's cracked up to be

  8. Your stash is so pretty and colorful. I go through organizing binges, too. Usually it is when I can no longer cut because too much is piled on my cutting space. I try to keep the rest of the stash neat as I pull fabrics for projects. I fold mine around a 5 inch ruler and then fold it in half, then stack them by color or theme depending on the fabrics. It works well for me and the space I have and no fussing with cardstock. I can not wait to see what you are working on!!

  9. I soooooo need to do this but there is always something else that grabs my attention (like my little miss 2!). I know I'll end up with more cupboard space once it's done but finding the time to do it is tricky thing. Well done you!!

  11. I need to reorganize my huge fabric stash at some point, but I have a lot of quilts to work on right now, so I think it will wait until there's nothing due.

I see TARDIS windows in that sneak peek, and some timey-wimey text. I'm sure it will be awesome. The geometric fabric is cool, too.

  12. No need for comic book boards - too flimsy. I cut my bolts 8 x 10 (size that fits my bookshelf) from cardboard boxes and like those so much better. And they are FREE!!

  13. I just organized all of my color on color and white and a single color fabrics this weekend. What do people do with total prints? Put them all together or put them with the dominant color. I did find some fat quarters that I'd forgotten about so that was a nice surprise. Good luck!

  14. After getting my sewing room organised a few months ago, now it all has to be packed up for moving day which is likely to be April 15. I really don't like moving and it's only the view from my new house that keeps me motivated!

  15. I am always organizing - to the detriment of actually sewing! Well, I don't like a stash to build, so I am trying to sew down my stash now and not buy much fabric. One bin is all I want to have ideally. But don't those scraps build?! Oh my.

  16. I tend to organise by throwing everything in a box/ bag/table and then sorting it out from there. Of course there is always stuff left in the bottom of the box/bag/table but it can get stuffed in a drawer or the back of a cupboard until next time...
I have comic book boars on my list of things I want for my sewing room, I love the idea of having my own little fabric bolts. And having them all standing up in a row just looks so wonderful! Are you loving it, or has it all collapsed back into a heap?
    E xx
