Oops.

Have you ever made a pretty serious mistake while sewing? I'd like to know! I made my biggest one to date today, but there's no lasting harm done.

I went and bought Heat n Bond light from the store - thinking it was fusible interfacing. I just saw the package and put it in my cart - along with another 1 yard package and one with I think 5 yards in it. I figured I would need it all for the two t-shirt quilts I'm working on. I've only used medium weight up to this point and the package was so similar, so I just went with it. That's not like me - I don't know what I was thinking!

Anyway, tonight I started ironing it on to the back of one of the cut t-shirts. I thought it looked different... turned out it was a very thin adhesive instead - gr.

Now I have to pick it all off of the half of the t-shirt I used because I don't think it will stick to the fusible interfacing I now need to buy! I even tested it first with a scrap of t-shirt but I just thought it wasn't working for some reason... it definitely worked when I used the whole shirt of course!

But the t-shirt is not ruined. It's just going to take a while to get that stuff off with my nails.

So what mistakes have you made? Am I alone? =P I'll be returning the other packages of adhesive and getting my interfacing! And I learned a lesson: READ EVERYTHING!

  2. Bummer!

When I was doing "garment assembly" at TAFE, I extended the length of the top I was making but instead of making a new pattern piece, the teacher told me to cut the paper pattern at a particular place, pin the two pieces to my fabric then draw the cutting line between the two pieces. I did, but you know what I'm going to say, don't you?

I cut around the now much smaller piece! I had to walk to the shops and buy some more of my very expensive fabric! Just as well I'd bought it that day at a store only one mile from the TAFE!
