Blast from the Past: School Spirit Quilt

As I sit here waiting for my last final (5 PM, and then I can finally drive home...), I figured I would continue telling the story of the quilts I have made so far.

This is what it looked like before it was all sewn together. It was made for one of my best friends in college, Melissa. She loves our school and was the president of the community service fraternity, APO. It was only fitting to use school colors (blue and yellow).

Before Melissa came along in the middle of my first semester in college (which was, wow... 2 years ago), I was lost. I wasn't getting along with my roommate, I involved myself in too many activities, and I ate alone most of the time. I didn't have any direction, and no really close friends. She helped a lot even though she didn't know it, and now, I am so happy to a) still be this close with her and b) have friends and be so much more comfortable in college.

You can't see it, but the backing has bees all over it :) So cute! I wish I had taken a closer picture.

When I make quilts - anything, really - I personalize it as much as I think is possible. Or, at least, I like to. This past July, I had no idea what to get her for her 20th birthday. I had just started quilting about a month before... and a week before her party, I realized what the perfect gift would be.

It's pretty simple in terms of construction, and you can see that I messed up on the rows a little bit, but it was my first time appliquing, and I think it turned out well. :) I also did not know about basting spray or any of those things yet, because I was self-taught and clearly hadn't done enough research yet. I still love this quilt, though!

So that's the story of this quilt :) Expect more frequent posting as I am home for winter break!
