WIP Wednesday: Modern Maples

This project has seen me through the end of a busy week and the beginning of another. October has been pulling me in all directions at once, so I'm looking forward to a more relaxing November!

A work-in-progress shot, threads and all.

I only made 12 of these Modern Maple blocks, but would you believe how long it takes for each step? Not that I minded - it gave me something to look forward to when I was working too hard on other things. The "typical" size is a 12" finished block, but I wanted mine smaller. Right when I was about to quit looking and figure out the quilt maths on my own, I found a tutorial for a 9" finished block on Sew Lux (this is the larger size listed). Score!

Wonder Clips made organizing easy and colorful.

Modern Maples are so fun, and I've made them a couple of times before (quilt pictured below and mug rug). You can really lay them out any way you want - and you know I love improv! This time around, I'll be improvising the amount of space between each. I have a love-hate relationship with half square triangles though - I've mastered making them but they are a lot of prep and become monotonous. That's why I enjoyed making the blocks in steps, one day at a time. Also, chain piecing does wonders.

I can't wait to share more of this project with you (ahh, like the backing!!). The rows are pressed and ready to be sewn together, and hopefully I'll be attaching this border to my Loominous/shot cotton quilt soon... I'll have to keep the Fray Check at the ready, though.

  1. Hi Jess! I love your Modern Maples! With the autumn colours it looks fantastic but this new project looks very unique. Gives me inspiration to use men's shirt. x Teje

  4. Jessica - I'm not a purple person when it comes to quilting. I have some purple clothing that I like to wear, but it's closer to a wine color than true purple. But the way you use purple makes me like purple in quilting and want to give it a chance in my quilting. Thank you for inspiring me!
