A week of small finishes

This week was our September guild meeting, which is always exciting (I love seeing my quilty friends in person!) but stressful (I program and run the meetings). I try to do as much as I can in advance, but things happen as they do. I also had a few deadlines for the meeting... here was one:

One of the best parts about the CJMQG is that we have great participation! Last month I challenged members to make a fall mug rug to swap (I'm the fall spirit already). I decided I'd make another Modern Maple (one of the first time I've wanted to make more blocks of a quilt I've already finished) with a low volume background (I forgot that "low volume" was another challenge we had going on!). We had so many beautiful mug rugs swapped:

I won Neva's (@nevaajo) in the blind swap and I'm in love! I had already admired it on Instagram so it was meant to be, perhaps? It looks beautiful as fall decor in our dining area. Neva is so talented!

Another small finish this week was a voile infinity scarf from Francis Newcombe's new Cherie voile. I love making voile scarves and I use this tutorial from Sew 4 Home. It's awesome - from 2 yards of 54 width fabric you can make two scarves (one for you and one for a friend!). I made a bunch of these for Christmas last year and they were a hit!

You have the option of top stitching - I like the way my light blue Aurifil thread contrasts with dark gray but matches the flower design. One scarf is on display at my LQS, Pennington Quilt Works, and the other is mine to wear when the weather cools down a bit more! If there's enough interest, I'll be teaching the scarf at our November guild retreat.

I found out it's difficult to photograph voile for some reason! It's so pretty and lightweight though, so we're still friends. :)

Wishing you a productive weekend of sewing! At the moment I'm trying to find my sewjo... it's been missing the last few days. :(

  1. You are braver (or have more time) than me. President and program, that's a double job. I've been in my guild for one year and I'm the one in charge of the program this year (after a year, crazy, I know, I need another challenge, like they say when you quit a job....) Anyway, our guild is a mix of traditional and contemporary (I wouldn't dare to say modern, except me sometimes and two or three more). Doing the program is a challenge because I have to balance between the ones who want to try something new, and the ones who think their way of doing things is the only way to go. The worst that can happen is that I failed. First meeting next week, meanwhile, 30 calendars to print, french&english version. The mug rug swap is a good idea. We will do a pincushion exchange at Christmas. If some people partipate, maybe a mug rug for next year could be an idea to explore. Always plaisant to read from you (and you so look like my little sister !)

  2. Another guild retreat! Gah, I am so jealous. Daily I am counting down to quiltcon, already living into the mommy-freedom and socializing!

  3. We did a zipper pouch swap this month in our MQG... love a swap! Perhaps I'll suggest mug rugs for a future swap!
