WIP Wednesday

You guys are the best! Thank you for all your encouraging comments and support on my recent Sewing With Certainty post on Creating Your Own Designs. I'm looking forward to reading your own blog posts on the topic - please link up so we can all see them! :)

Yesterday (a snow/it-was-too-cold-for-us-New-Jerseyans day), I started my January goal - quilting the snowflake strip quilt. Right now, I'm doing a random all-over pattern of swirls (like the wind) and some random free motion snowflakes. The flakes are really quite fun to make. I love trying out new designs, and "just swirls" would have me yawning 15 minutes in. No joke.

By the way, I've noticed FMQ is a bit more difficult with the flannel backing. I don't have Supreme Slider but I am using quilting gloves. It's just a little tougher to move the quilt. However, I set my stitch speed to medium, which is a bit slower than I usually stitch when FMQing.

The husband tested the flannel backing - it's the first time I've tried it - and wants all future quilts in this house to be backed with flannel. Guess that's a reason to go buy more fabric? Wishful thinking?

  1. You *still* don't have one?! Seriously, you will loooove it, especially with flannel backing! I hate quilting with flannel on the back, it makes it a lot more work. Your quilting looks great though!

  3. I'm in Arkansas and it's still freezing! I spent the day quilting too, sure beats going out in this weather. Your quilt is lovely, I like your snowflakes!

  4. Looking great so far! I, too, highly recommend the Supreme Slider. It will definitely help with flannel. They come in two sizes but you can get away with buying the smaller (cheaper) one :-)

  8. At least of all future quilts are to be flannel backed, you'll get plenty of practice with FMQ,

  9. Rachel's reply reminded me of a quilt I had as a kid that was corduroy on the back - had little scarecrows all over it in a Richard Scary-esque print. Definitely warm cozy fabrics for backs are delightful! I'd love to try minky but can't imagine the headache of basting/quilting it.

  11. OH YES, you definitely need a slider. I use one and gloves! By the way, one of these days, I'm going to get it together to be able to link you your party. I am just so bad at writing posts for a particular purpose. Most of my stuff centers around what I'm working on.

Thanks a bunch for linking up to Needle and Thread Thursday!

  13. Yea, I think I lost my comment. Love Flannel backing. Keep up the pretty work. I like this fabric and how the blocks are put together.

  14. Don't you just love the snuggliness of flannel? I do, I do! Those snowflakes add a lot of interest to the quilting and I especially love how you did them against the red! I don't have a supreme slider either.... but I think it would be a great investment. Good for you, getting right to work on your January goal. You go, girlfriend!
