Pantone Radiant Orchid Challenge - getting excited!

2014 Pantone Quilt Challenge: Radiant Orchid

I've started scheming... ahem... planning for my Pantone Challenge quilt (thanks to my friends Adrianne and Anne for hosting!). I seriously can't wait to dive into this project. Many of you know that purple is my color. :) I've only made one purple quilt so far, which is actually a shame. But I LOVE that quilt to pieces.

Here's my original fabric pull, which I posted on Instagram a few days ago. I threw a couple more actual "orchids" (purple-pink-ish) after the fact. I've been building up my purple stash since the beginning because whenever you find a good purple ... well, whenever I find one... I buy it :) (sorry husband).  I can't wait to get started, but I haven't committed to anything yet (mini quilt? large quilt? just gray and white as neutrals? other colors?). Just keeping it real here!

Something I can add to my recent SWC post about creating designs - I wait until inspiration truly strikes. I have a really cool idea about moon phases but I haven't decided how I'll go about that quite yet. I may toy with ideas a bit longer in my design/graph paper book before I commit.

Are you entering the challenge?

  1. I think I will have to live vicariously through you on this challenge, I don't think I will have the time to create something awesome enough to enter. I guess I'll know in another month or so. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, I love the moon idea, though it does sound tricky.

  2. I have no idea what I'm going to make. I will make something because I LOVE purple. May not get it finished in time, but I'm going to try.
I love your fabric pull. The grey is such a nice compliment to the purples. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :-)

  4. The flimsy I was working towards today, and which will be the star of my "creating designs" post, is called "violet and Friends" -- not quite Radiant Orchid but related! I'm sure you'll love it because it's got twice as much purple as any one other colour and it's bright and happy and my own design!

  5. Love your fabric choices - great range of values and patterns!

BTW - I use graph paper and colored pencils too! I've used EQ in the past but I prefer the flow of the pencil on paper.

  6. I made a purple quilt for my MIL - the only other color I added was black, everything else was lavender (so light it almost looks white) to deep purple. It was a fun quilt to make - a sampler of stars - and quilting was a blast with lots of different kinds of feathers - one block has 88 starts and stops! Can't wait to see what you make for your purple quilt!!!

  7. I am not a flying purple modern quilter. Then again, neither am I twenty something anymore. But I do know exactly what you mean when you say, "...wait until inspiration truly strikes" And the fabric will tell you when you are ready! Then there will be no stopping you! Love the addition of the grays! No, no! Not the ones in my hair!
