Quilters Take Manhattan Blog Hop and Giveaway

*This giveaway is now closed, and the winner is Yvonne. Congrats!*

The Quilt Alliance is near and dear to my heart, and I'm honored to be part of their first blog hop! I've admired their commitment to preserving quilt stories and I've always watched their Quilters Take Manhattan event from afar. Hopefully I'll get to go one day!
http://quiltalliance.org/events/quilters-take-manhattan-2016/bloghop/

In case you haven't heard of the Quilt Alliance, they are a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving quilt stories. Some of their programs include Go Tell It at the Quilt Show! (see my interview here as an example), Quilters Save Our Stories, National Quilting Day, and their annual fundraiser contest, for which I recently made "In The Wind."

Quilters Take Manhattan is a 3-day long annual fundraising extravaganza (this is its 6th year!) running from September 23-25. Most of the events are sold out now, including the Saturday main event, which features Mary Fons as the emcee and speakers Kaffe Fassett and Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi. Plus, my friend and fellow guild member Meg Cox is leading a special scavenger hunt through Manhattan, just for quilters. Doesn't that just sound like a great time?

You can win a Moda Home Ticket ($35 value), which includes this beautiful bag packed with samples and special treats (fabric, notions, etc.) from the QTM Sponsors. You will also receive an email link to several of the events, including the infamous Quilt Match Challenge and Sunday with Sponsors! You'll feel like you're there!

Here's what was in last year's bag!

Details: This drawing is open to all, but international winners are responsible for any customs fees that may be charged when shipment enters their country. You must leave an email address to win (or have an email address linked to your posting account). The giveaway will close at 10 PM EST on Sunday, 9/11, and I will choose a winner using the Random Number Generator, then email them.

  • For 1 chance to win, leave me a comment about how you label your quilts (if you don't, you can say that!). I've been using premade tags lately but I'm planning to go on a labeling spree this fall/winter. I've been on such a quilt-finishing roll that I've let this very important detail slide! At least I document everything on my blog, right?

  • For a 2nd chance, subscribe to my bimonthly free newsletter, The Wonky Press, and leave a comment to let me know. I work hard to pack it full of exclusive editorials, links, and content related to the modern quilting world. It's coming up on its one year anniversary - they'll be a giveaway for readers next month!

You can hop to these other fantastic blogs for more chances to win, and you can purchase a Moda Home Ticket if you just can't wait! Good luck!

I also hope you'll click over to the Quilt Alliance's new website to see more of what they're all about. It's an organization worth supporting. We need to preserve quilt stories!

  1. I like to get creative with labels. If I have a trial block I use that or I make a heart or something special for the corner.

  2. I just subscribed. I would love a treasure hunt. I miss NYC.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I usually fold a 5-6" solid square of fabric in half diagonally and use my machine embroidery letters to write my name, date, and other info such as the pattern name. This then gets sewn into the corner with the binding step.

  4. I've just started labeling my quilts . I will be busy this winter !

  6. I have some unexciting printed labels I use sometimes, other times I make a fabric label with pertinent information, sometimes I leave the label off (bad quilter!). I've seen some of the custom printed labels that are available online and think I really ought to get some and become more consistent about adding labels.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To label my quilts, I use an extra fine point Sharpie and write directly on the backing! Not possible to tear that label off!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I make my own labels - somtimes I embroider them :) thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I make a label that I sew into a corner on the back of the quilt. I write the quilt name, year, and my name on the label with colored fabric pens. Sometimes I draw a design on the label or embellish it with embroidery thread. I have even made a label to reflect the theme of the quilt. For example, I made a baseball themed quilt and the label looked like home plate.

  10. Oh I wish I would label my Quilts right as I finish them! I set them aside to admire and go on to the next. I am selling one so I have a label on the back made from the same appliques I used on the front. I just haven't written on it yet! Others I have made a small square and used the embroidery function on my machine to put my name on it. I have dabbled with a couple of different ideas but haven't found what I like best yet. anitalynette.simmons@yahoo.com

  11. I'm trying to do better. I purchased a label from Etsy for the quilt I made for my son's wedding, but mostly I just use my name and date. Thanks for the giveaway. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com

  13. Sometimes I label my quilts. When I do, I cut a square and fold it in triangular shape and sew two sides while sewing the binding on. Then I just have to hand stitch the top. sandi1100@yahoo.com

  15. I always sew on a small label that I ordered with my name on it. If it's a bigger project, I like to add a label with the date and to/from. I figure if it's worth making, it's worth giving credit to the maker!

  16. Well, I 'm a beginner quilter-but with two quilt tops finished & one being quilted, I plan to label each & eveyone of them. I bought a book, which includes several ideas for quilty labels, which I plan on trying.

  17. Sometimes I label, sometimes I don't. When I do, my favorite method is the corner triangle truck that cuts down on the amount of hand sewing. Thanks for offering this chance to win!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I confess to not labeling unless it's a Quilts for Kids quilt for which the pre-printed label is provided.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have just started labeling my quilts (when I remember or if it's a special gift), I love the premade labels, but handmade messages are also really nice (and I don't have to invest in lots of labels!).

  27. I vacillate between doing really well labeling by either stitching a label into the backing or appliqueing it down or not labeling at all. I have been thinking that ordering some fabric labels to stitch into the binding might be worth trying...

    ReplyDelete
  28. And I am subscribed (and love receiving) your newsletter! :)

  29. I've done different things over the years. A couple of times I've made my label on the computer, ironed fabric onto a sheet of printer-friendly freezer paper, and printed the label directly onto the fabric. But not every printer can handle that, I've found! For my most recent quilts, I've printed the label onto paper, ironed the fabric onto freezer paper, and then traced the letters onto the fabric with a Micron pen (very fine with permanent ink). I've also written freehand with the Micron pen, on a label or the back of the quilt, and once I even embroidered the name of the quilt on the back with one of the color-changing threads I'd used in the quilting.

  79. I started labeling my quilts about a year ago! I use a fabric pen and write on a scrap of fabric typically, then I stitch it on by hand to the back. I'd love to have some fancier printed labels, but my handwritten ones are serving me well and help me slow down when I'm rushing to finish things up. :)

  85. I started out being a good little quilter and making labels for my quilts. But I've fallen by the wayside. This weekend, my daughter and I were going through my surplus quilts and she wanted to take some but she wants me to label them (and put the date made....uh oh!). Time to do some research!!!

  87. I have used preprinted quilt labels, but now will take a muslin square, border it with fabric from the quilt, write the appropriate information with indelible ink, and hand sew it on the back left lower corner. Ideally I'd do this before I quilt the quilt, but more often end up forgetting till the quilt is done!

I do label my quilts. Always! It could be as simple as "Made especially for ... by ...) to something more elaborate like I did on my husband's West Coast Choppers quilt (quilt name, made especially for ..., picture of us, date, designed/created by, quilted by). I sometimes commemorate the event (ie: Happy Birthday). If time is limited before presenting quilt, I only sign my name and include the date.
