Pincushion Sew Along with Fat Quarter Shop!

I'm Jess, and welcome my stop on the Fat Quarter Shop Pincushion Sew Along! Only once in a while do I really branch out from making quilts, but I've learned to LOVE pincushions. I was thrilled to make a Pretty Pincushion using the free video tutorial! After all, sometimes you just need a small project, right?

This is a very simple, quick project that can easily be completed in under a half hour if you're an experienced sewist. The most time-consuming part was choosing fabrics! I decided to use part of a Kona solids mini charm pack (2.5" squares) and a coordinating scrap lovingly left over from my Mini Meadow Quilt. Sunset colors are my thing. Plus, I had a really cute burlap ruler ribbon from the $1 bin at Target, thanks to alerts all over Instagram sometime last year. The Fat Quarter Shop used this adorable ribbon for their pin cushion!

Quilting is my favorite part of any project, so I didn't hesitate to try detailed free motion quilting on something this small. I used Aurifil #2605, a pretty medium gray, to add some yummy texture to the solids. Once I was done, I had second thoughts, but now I can't imagine it without the quilting! Pincushions and small projects are the perfect avenue to try new motifs or practice your quilting.

I backed the pincushion in a scrap of Anna Maria Horner flannel, left over from my Epic AMH Medallion. Kimberly and Sherri suggested using a heavier fabric for the back, and I can totally see why - it gives the pincushion so much more stability and weight. Also, a quick shout out to my friend Laura B. (@drlbennett) who supplied me with several cups of walnut bird litter for the inside of this pincushion and several in the future. Thanks, Laura!

All my pincushions! The middle two were made by my talented friend Shannon @shannonatsilverforge.

My favorite part of this tutorial was learning a great seam allowance trick at the very end, before you are ready to turn your pincushion right side out. I had never heard of it before, and Sherri's advice worked splendidly! Thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop for a fast, fun, and helpful project.

Here's the video tutorial, and check on below for the rest of the pincushion sewists!

  2. Actually I'm fairly sure that isn't ALL your pincushions...seems like there is an itty bitty AMH churn dash one missing ;-) I love the quilting and ribbon details on yours! I totally want to go make one now...
