Background color help! - Sister's Ten BOM

I'm officially joining the Sister's Ten BOM at Gen X Quilters! I've actually resisted traditional block formation since I began quilting, so I want to practice. The layout is really unique and modern, so that sets it off as well. I also love the concept behind the quilt - each block stands for a special woman in your life. It's going to be an important project for me this year, and I can't explain fully why until December!

Sister's Ten BOM Fabric Pull

Anyway, I made my fabric pull, and I'm just in love with these colors together. As I said on flickr, I want to stay away from using white as a background again. I'm thinking Kona Ash or Medium Grey - which one do you think? (I'm worried one is too light, and the other is two dark, but I've never worked with either before - just Kona Coal, which is a super dark gray).

  1. I love the purple/lavenders that you chose. I lean towards the grey as a backbround, the ash may make the purples look muddy where the grey should cool them if that makes sence at all. Regardless it will be beautiful!

Not until December. That's a whole year away....hmmmm;)

  4. I wish Kona would come out with a color in between the two. I've worked with both - Kona Ash is one of my all-time favorites, but it might wash out the light purples you've pulled. The darker gray would probably be a safer bet for the fabrics you've chosen. Looks like it will be a fun quilt!

  5. Personally, I'd go with Kona Coal....but that's just me. Ultimately, you have to decide which YOU like best.

  6. Can you do a small test block? I think one's too light and one's too dark but maybe when you see it put together it will just speak to you one way or the other.

  7. I use medium grey a lot - I think it would work really well with your (beautiful) fabric pull. It's not too dark IRL.

  8. I would need to see the solids with the fabrics in order to make a decision!
